Bancroft’s Inter-School Spelling Bee
Following the success of the recent Spelling Bees between groups of rival Bancroftians, the inaugural Bancroft's Inter-School Spelling Bee took place on Thursday 20 November. We played host to four other schools (Chigwell, Brentwood, Christ’s Hospital and Haileybury) and their best Year 8 spelling teams.
The action started with ‘last-man-standing’ which was hotly contested, with three rounds of easy, average and difficult words to spell. Each team made an excellent effort with some extremely challenging words, but the winners of the round were ‘Brentwood’s Best Bees’, who took home the ‘last-man-standing’ prize, and finished the first round joint top with the Bancroft's Stingers.
Next was the quick-fire challenge, where each team was given two minutes to correctly spell as many words as they could. With some truly valiant efforts at mind-boggling words, each team had something to celebrate.
All fifteen contenders had given their all, but the well-deserved victory went to the Bancroft's Stingers (Sonia Kalsi, Wardah Thanvi and Emilia Hitching).
In what was an intense ‘Battle of the Bees’ competition, special highlights included the comical moments and spelling bee trivia provided by presenter, Joe Oxlade, and Thomas Leung in Dictionary Corner. We look forward to hosting the event again next year!
