Entrance Assessments

January

Here at Bancroft’s Prep School we want to make all children feel welcome and at ease. Yes, we are a selective school but we believe that ‘academic’ must also mean warm and friendly, never cold.

The children visit us on two separate occasions in the January before their intended year of entry.

The Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning parts of our entrance assessments take place in the Prep School in early January

About a week later, all the children are invited back to see us in small groups for the English assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a piece of creative writing.

Sample paper

7+ Sample Mathematics Paper

We do not provide a sample English paper, but we aim to make the assessment a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Children will read a short story in a small group and then complete a comprehension activity based on what they’ve read. They’ll also have the chance to write their own creative piece inspired by a given title.

We love to see good grammar and punctuation, but what matters most to us is hearing each child’s unique voice and seeing their imagination shine through.

The staff involved in our testing are very experienced at working with young children; we want them to feel positive about their time with us and able to do their best.

Offers and Acceptance

FEBRUARY AND MARCH

Offers will be sent by email during our February half term, with the deadline to accept in early March.

We are looking to fill around 60 places at our 7+ entry point.

Please be aware that we also maintain a wait list for those who have performed exceptionally well in our tests and interview.

Given the high demand for places and the limited number of available spots, not all applicants can be accommodated immediately. Being on the wait list is a positive position, and we will keep you informed if spaces become available.

Upon acceptance of a place, we require a £2500 deposit.
