Forging New Links in Haßfurt

From 25 June to 1 July, eight pupils from Bancroft’s School and 6 pupils from in Chigwell school took part in a memorable exchange visit to Haßfurt, Germany, the first time in the 45+ year history of this partnership with the Regiomontanus Gymnasium that students from Chigwell have been involved.

The week was packed with cultural highlights and exciting experiences. We explored the historic cities of Würzburg and Bamberg, where pupils enjoyed guided tours led by professional local experts who brought the rich history and stunning architecture of both cities to life.

Over the weekend, our pupils stayed with host families and got a real taste of everyday German life. Activities ranged from day trips to Munich and the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle, to outdoor adventures such as high ropes climbing in Saxon Switzerland, as well as boating and swimming in the region’s beautiful lakes and rivers.

Pupils also spent two days attending lessons with their exchange partners at the Regiomontanus Gymnasium. This gave them valuable insight into the German school system and allowed them to experience a wide range of subjects alongside their hosts.

On our second-to-last day, we gathered with the pupils, their German partners, and host families at a local beer garden, where we enjoyed a relaxed lunch together, a lovely way to celebrate the week and the many new friendships formed.

This exchange was a fantastic opportunity for our students to practise their German, step out of their comfort zones, and truly immerse themselves in the culture and daily life of another country. We are proud to continue this partnership and look forward to building on it in years to come.
