Inspiration from Athlete Mentor

After her successful visit last summer, we were delighted to welcome Sky Sports Athlete Mentor and former GB-Olympian Jeanette Kwakye back to Bancroft’s on Friday 7 February.  This time Jeanette worked with larger groups of pupils of varying athletic abilities rather than focussing on a smaller number of pupils.  The morning started with a motivational talk to some of our top performing athletes, many of whom are already playing at county level and above.

Focussing on her own career, from her days as a schoolgirl netballer to how she turned her career around after injury prevented her from competing in London 2012, she shared the importance of commitment, focus and determination.  Jeanette then worked with groups of Remove and L4th pupils; they played games and undertook some challenging exercises, which developed a sense of teamwork and underlined the importance of working together and playing by the rules.

Danni Haynes, the PE teacher who has been instrumental in organising Jeanette’s visits said, “Jeanette is a total inspiration to our pupils, she brings sport and its key ideals into an everyday context, inspiring pupils to work hard to achieve their goals, be it in sport or any other aspect of their lives. She brings the classroom to life with games and activities beyond our traditional sports, and enables the pupils to find enjoyment and excitement in physical activity.  It was a joy to have her in school and we look forward to her next visit in the summer term.”
