International Kids’ Lit Champions
A team of book loving Bancroftians has just won the Kids’ Lit Quiz international final to become this year’s world champions. After beating teams from all over the UK earlier in the year at the UK Finals in Newcastle, the team of four (Anna Tindall, Elana Kaymer, Francis Clark-Murray and Catriona Phillips) qualified for the International Final held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Here they faced the best teams from China, New Zealand and South Africa. In an exciting and extremely tense final, the Bancroft’s students emerged victorious, beating their formidable New Zealand rivals by a single point.
While in South Africa the teams were treated to a busy schedule of touring and they experienced many facets of modern South Africa: spending time in both Soweto and Sun City and viewing the amazing wildlife of the Pilanesberg National Park. English teacher, Kevin Gallagher, who accompanied the team, said that the “sight of wildebeest, baboons, giraffes, hippos, rhinos and elephants was one of the highlights of the trip for the children.” The enduring friendships made with the other competitors was another highlight of the visit.
