Maths Team Challenge Victory

On Friday 8 March, there was a further maths victory for Bancroft’s mathematicians. In the Essex and North East London round of the United Kingdom Maths Trust Team Challenge, which was held here , the School’s A team – Sayon Uthayakumar, Rishan Rashid, Lana Mawlood and Meera Murali – were victorious, beating the team from King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford by the narrowest of margins – a single point separating the two. The team from Brentwood were third.

The Bancroft’s B team – Arun Soor, Nivethan Balakulendran, Daffy Dhayaa and Laeticia Junanto – finished in very creditable fourth place. This means that the Bancroft’s four now go onto this year’s national final which will be held at the Royal Horticultural Hall on 17 June. Teams from twenty-six state and independent schools from around the area, including: Roding Valley High School, Ilford County High School, Braeside, Chigwell, King Solomon’s High School and Debden Park High School, competed in a day of maths challenges.

This was one of more than Regional Finals which are held across the UK from February to March.  Each school enters a team of four pupils in years 8 and 9 and the teams compete in a variety of rounds which are designed to promote mathematical dexterity, team working and communication skills as well as giving the pupils a chance to compete against other schools in their area. All the pupils clearly enjoyed the event and got a real buzz from the various challenges which proved that maths really is fun!
