Meet Jo: From England Hockey to Bancroft’s
For almost 30 years, Jo has been a key part of Bancroft’s, guiding pupils on and off the sports field.
Currently working as Head of Upper Fourth and a dedicated games teacher, her journey at Bancroft’s began in 1996 with a maternity cover role. Though she briefly stepped away to work as a physical training instructor for the City of London Police, she soon returned as Head of Hockey and has remained at Bancroft’s ever since.
Over the years, Jo has taken on a variety of roles, including teaching English and being an Exams Officer—an unexpected but enjoyable challenge given. Now, as Head of Year for Upper Fourth and a games teacher, she values the opportunity to build strong relationships with pupils in her year. Seeing their growth and development, particularly in confidence, remains one of the most rewarding aspects of her job.
Can you tell us about your sporting career before joining Bancroft’s?
I was a full England international hockey player. I got picked for the England senior team when I was 16 and played until I was about 28. I competed in World Championships and European Championships.
What inspired you to work in education?
I had such an inspiring PE teacher at school, and I just loved sport. It was never really a question for me—I knew I wanted to teach PE. I went to the University of Brighton, which was Chelsea PE College at the time, and studied PE and English. My role is still heavily focused on PE, but as Head of Year, I get to build a closer relationship with my year group.
How has sports evolved over the years at Bancroft’s?
There have certainly been changes over the years, which has been great because it has energised us and given us a fresh outlook. We’ve had a lot of successes with pupils during my time here, including national netball and athletics championships. The department has really evolved to focus more on the foundation of the pyramid—getting more pupils involved—which aligns with our values.
The relationships we build with pupils, seeing their confidence grow, and especially when they develop a passion for a sport because of our input, is so rewarding.
It’s really about empowering our pupils, and that’s something we do so well here.
Preparing them for life outside school and integrating a healthy lifestyle is so important. I love hearing when pupils continue a sport they enjoyed at Bancroft’s or become part of a team after they leave.
In what ways would you like to see the Sports Department grow in the future?
I’m a big advocate for mixed-gender training and giving boys and girls the opportunity to play together. I think it helps build confidence, especially for girls. We’ve started introducing more mixed training sessions, and I’d love to see a mixed school fixture in the future.
Tell us about your thoughts and your involvement in the Bancroft’s community
Getting involved in the Bancroft’s community is integral, really. I’ve seen the school evolve, and I always enjoy attending events. I particularly love going to OB (Old Bancroftian) events—catching up with former pupils and hearing about their experiences is amazing. Keeping in touch and maintaining these relationships is so important.
It has been wonderful to hear about your journey over the years, Jo!
Thank you for sparing the time to talk to us.
