Prep Girls Crowned Chess Champions
Bancroft’s Prep School’s Under 11 girls’ team has reclaimed their title as national champions at the English Chess Federation’s U11 Finals.
Over two demanding days (5–6 April), Zoe, Mary, and Ishta delivered a commanding performance, winning every match across nine rounds and dropping just a single game in the process. They competed against top schools from across the country, many with long-established chess traditions.
This marks Bancroft’s second national title in three years, reinforcing the school’s growing presence on the competitive chess circuit.
The team is coached by professional instructors and supported by Deputy Head Lisa Life, who introduced competitive chess to the Prep five years ago. Reflecting on the win, Lisa said:
“I am overwhelmed by the grit and competitive spirit our girls showed. To hold their nerve in so many tight games when everything was on the line was just awesome.”
The majority of teams competing in the finals were from girls-only schools, making this achievement particularly special for a co-educational school team who truly held their own at every stage.
A proud moment that highlights the progress and promise of chess at Bancroft’s.
