A Busy Six Weeks in Careers

12th February 2026 Whole School
2026 has started with a bang for the Careers Department at Bancroft’s.

On 27 January the school hosted its biennial Old Bancroftians Careers Evening. It was a great pleasure to see so many alumni supporting the next generation of OBs. Over the last month alone, I’ve chatted with actors, hedge fund managers, Egyptologist and senior members of the foreign office to name but a few. All have graciously given up their time to help inform and guide our students in their next steps.

The following week, at our Competitive Futures Event, the school welcomed admissions officers from University College London, Warwick and Cambridge. Each officer provided our students with specialised advice on how to make the most competitive university application. Not to be outdone, Professor Ishani Chandrasekara from Queen Mary University of London gave a compelling talk on PwC’s Flying Start Programme.

On both occasions, I have been impressed by our L6th students’ willingness to help and the erudite manner in which they have conducted themselves.

Lower down the school, the Thirds have been working hard on their Town Planning Project, taking on the role of planners, designers and architects to create innovative developments for controversial sites in the local area.

I am very much looking forward to watching their presentations and, along with Ms Lawes, the newly appointed Oracy Co-ordinator, developing their oracy skills.

Although it is hard to pick, one of my favourite moments of this half term was watching the L4th practice their handshakes in a session on ‘Communicate and Connect’, which formed part of their Careers Morning.

The L4ths participation was remarkable, gaining the utmost praise from the presenters. I look forward to seeing them put this into practice at future networking events the school offers.

Looking ahead, next half term brings even more key events. On 3 March, we host our annual Virtual Degree Apprenticeship evening, followed by our University and Careers Fair on 25 March.

The Careers fair will be a huge event, with employers and universities from all over the country represented. We will be opening the doors to our students from local schools, parents and students from L4th onwards.….time to put those handshakes into practice!
