Rugby is a key part of boys’ sport at Bancroft’s during the autumn term. The programme promotes teamwork, resilience and personal development, values that sit at the heart of rugby and the wider school ethos.
Participation and Fixtures
The Senior School can field up to seven teams at weekends, ensuring opportunities across all levels of experience and ability.
- Home fixtures take place at West Grove
- Saturday features a full block of matches against local schools
- Many age groups field both A and B teams
At junior level, U12 and U13 squads also play regular Saturday and midweek fixtures. The junior fixture card includes blocks against strong independent, grammar and state schools, providing a varied and competitive programme.
Competitions
The U15 squad enters the NatWest Cup, giving players valuable experience in a national competition. Junior teams also compete in regional and local matches that support player development at an early stage.
Player Pathways
Bancroft’s rugby players are frequently selected for county programmes in Essex and Middlesex. Several pupils have progressed into academy environments and beyond. Former pupil Andy Saul, for example, represented England Saxons and played professionally for Saracens, Newcastle and Leeds. A number of recent captains have also been part of Premiership academy pathways.
Tours and Enrichment
Touring forms an important part of the rugby experience at Bancroft’s. Senior squads regularly take part in overseas tours, which have included long haul destinations such as the Far East, Canada and South Africa. Younger age groups also enjoy shorter domestic tours, with the U12 squad traditionally travelling to Wales at the end of the autumn term. These tours strengthen team culture and broaden players’ sporting experience.
