Amelia’s Journey to Strasbourg

7th July 2025 Whole School
When Amelia was recommended an exciting opportunity studying German, she didn’t expect it would take her all the way to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

But that’s exactly where she found herself, representing youth voices at one of the largest political gatherings for young people in Europe: the European Youth Event. We caught up with her to hear all about the journey.

How did you get involved in the European Youth Event?

I actually found out about it through my German teacher, who recommended I apply. I just filled out a form online, and not long after, I got an email saying I’d been selected! I didn’t really know what to expect at first, but it turned out to be such an incredible opportunity.

What was the event all about?

The whole idea behind the event is to get young people from across the EU involved in big political topics. We had talks and discussions with Members of the European Parliament about things like climate change, the EU’s budget, and how to involve more young voices in shaping the future of Europe.

What was it like being part of such a diverse group?

It was amazing. There wasn’t really a system where you stuck with people from your country, it was a real mix. I met people from all over Europe, and even a few from the U.S.

Everyone had such different backgrounds and reasons for being there, which made every conversation interesting.

What did you learn from it?

It opened my eyes to how the EU works, especially how complicated it is to agree on a budget when every country has such different priorities. It also made me realise how important it is for young people to be involved in these discussions.

Studying A Level German, did it come in handy?

Definitely! Even though the event was in English, I met a few Austrian students at a session on AI and democracy, and I was able to speak to them in German. It helped me connect with them on a whole other level, which was really rewarding.

Looking back, what stands out about the experience?

Just being surrounded by so many passionate young people who all wanted to make a difference, it was inspiring. And being there in person, in Strasbourg, with my family, made it all even more special.

Thank you Amelia for sharing your journey with us, it is a brilliant example of what can happen when you say yes to opportunities that come your way.
