LAMDA Speech Lessons
Lesson availability for September is now at capacity and therefore no more bookings can be made at this stage. There will be an opportunity to apply for lessons in the next academic year.
Speech lessons are a very popular optional extra. These lessons follow the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) syllabus, and the pupils are able to take examinations in “The Speaking of Verse and Prose”. Many pupils progress to achieve Gold Medal (Grade 8) standard. These examinations are intended to encourage candidates to attain a good standard of speech, as well as developing confidence, imagination and expressive skills. The basic requirements are work on voice and diction, together with the study, appreciation and interpretation of literature. LAMDA examinations take place at School in June (also in December for Sixth Form pupils).
The fee is £100 for ten group lessons and will be added to ‘Sundries’ on your School Fees Bill at the end of each term.
Speech lessons are very popular and numbers are restricted. Prompt booking is necessary to avoid disappointment. Pupils who currently take lessons at Bancroft’s Prep will also need to book their lessons at the Senior School, as they do not automatically continue.
Speech lessons will begin in the week commencing Monday 9 September 2024. Lessons take place on Thursdays for Thirds at 8.10am (before school), lunchtime or 4.00pm (after school). Lessons are available for Lower Sixth, in small groups, Monday to Friday during their study periods.
If a pupil is unable to attend their lesson for any reason, they must inform their speech teacher or Libby Oliver, as soon as possible. No remission of fees is allowed for missed lessons. If lessons are to be discontinued, one term’s notice in writing is required or fees in lieu.
Please email LJO@bancrofts.org in the first week of the Autumn Term to confirm the time of your child’s class, although this may change if it clashes with other activities.
