Sports Information for Thirds (Year 7)
Thirds' games lessons are on Friday afternoons.
We are fortunate to have excellent indoor and outdoor facilities as well as the use of Old Loughtonians Hockey Centre. This allows us to give all pupils a good grounding in many team and individual sports.
Major Sports Programme:
|Summer||Athletics, Cricket, Tennis||Athletics, Cricket|
Pupils have three 50 minute PE lessons per fortnight (on top of their two Games lessons per week)
We adopt a ‘diamond’ structure, so that pupils are taught in mixed gender lessons in the Thirds (Yr 7). They then split in the Removes before returning to predominantly mixed lessons in the Fifth Form.
Autumn term: Basketball & Swimming
Spring term: Gymnastics & Swimming
Summer term: Athletics
Squads and Fixtures
Squads for all the major sports are selected at the start of the appropriate term; however, pupils are often added to squads as they make progress in lessons. It is looked upon as an honour to be selected to represent the School. This involves a strong commitment from the pupils to attend training and matches during the week and on Saturdays. If for any reason this is not possible, e.g. a family wedding etc, a letter of explanation is required from the parents, at least two weeks in advance.
Team lists, together with the arrangements, are always put up during the week prior to the fixture, usually after training (on the noticeboard outside the Academic Office), and may also be found on SOCS.
