Music
Music plays an integral part in life at Bancroft’s. In the first two years, all pupils experience a broad musical education that includes composing, performing and listening across a range of genres, from classical works to contemporary styles. Older pupils can choose to continue their studies at GCSE and A Level.
Beyond the classroom, there is a rich co-curricular programme of orchestras, choirs, bands and smaller ensembles. Many pupils also form their own groups, performing popular music and exploring new styles together.
“As a musician who enjoys playing many genres, it’s amazing to have the chance to explore such a variety of music.”
The Music Department is based in the Stave, which includes a large rehearsal space, teaching rooms, practice rooms and a technology suite equipped with Apple Macs for recording and composition. Instrumental and vocal tuition is available each week from a team of experienced visiting staff, and pupils benefit from regular masterclasses with professional musicians.
Concerts take place throughout the year, both in school and at venues in the local area and in London. The highlight of the musical calendar is the annual concert at Drapers’ Hall in the City of London. Every group performs at least once a year, and there are regular opportunities for soloists. House music events, organised largely by senior pupils, add to the vibrancy of musical life, from assemblies and family evenings to the annual Inter-House Performing Arts Competition.
