Bancroftian Win in British Science Week

Congratulations to Florence in L4N (year 9) who has been awarded first prize in the Senior category of this year’s poster competition for British Science Week.  The competition, which was open to pupils from years 8 to 10 from the UK, was on the theme of “Exploration and Discovery and encouraged pupils to “get creative”.  Entries were shortlisted by members of the British Science Association and a panel of judges  selected a winner in each category.  Last year, the competition as a whole attracted 13,000 entries from around 240 schools, organisations or individuals

Florence’s’ striking scarlet and black poster design urged us to discover “HER- story” rather then just “HIS-story”.  When asked what inspired her, she said that “as a feminist I am interested into how feminism fits into all areas.  I wanted to show how women have been overlooked in the past. Men have been glorified and pushed into the spotlight but women’s’ achievements, particularly in science have been ignored.”  She went on to say, “My mum is my role model and was very supportive of my idea for the poster.”  Not only does Florence’s poster celebrate women who were scientific explorers but it encourages us to go out and discover some forgotten names in science.
