Badminton Golds at Copper Box
Bancroft's badminton players represented Redbridge in three of the four groups in the East London round of the London Youth Games (which also doubles as the county round for the National Schools Championships) which took place in the iconic Copper Box Arena, in Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Tuesday 10th February. They took on teams from other East London boroughs, including Walthamstow, Newham and Havering.
In the KS4 Boys’ competition Bancroft’s boys secured first place. Although they won all of their group stage matches with ease, they faced tougher competition against Havering’s Hall Mead School in the final, but battled through to win 3-2. The KS3 girls did especially well in winning all three of their group matches without dropping a single game; their top form continued into the play off for 1st and 2nd places in which they beat Bexley Grammar School 5-0. In their group, the KS3 boys lost only to the eventual age group winners Havering’s Coopers’ Coborn School; they then beat Newham’s Brampton Manor in the play off for third and fourth places.
Coach John Raw stated that he “was delighted with their performances, and looks forward to the regional round, where hopefully we can go one better than last year and get through to the finals of the National Schools Championships”. The regional round is being held at Crystal Palace on Tuesday 24th March.
