GCSEs 2019 – fantastic performances

We have seen another year of excellent performances at GCSE by our Fifth Form (year 11) pupils.

All examinations have now moved to the restructured, tougher GCSEs which has seen a change in grading from the old system.  Under the new GCSEs, the old top mark of A* has been replaced by grades 9 and 8.  We are delighted to report that over a fifth of our year 11 cohort has achieved a full house of grade 9 or 8s, with four of them – Sara, Benedict, Charles and Christopher – gaining a clean sweep of 9s: a truly exceptional feat.  (This year a mere 0.1% of all candidates nationwide who sat seven or more GCSEs obtained this achievement.)  Benedict said of his grades, “I’m incredibly happy with my results and I’m also very thankful to Bancroft’s for the support and help given to me throughout my GCSE years.”  Charles was surprised by his ten grade 9s, “I’m so relieved and have done better than I expected.”  Alex Dhayaa (8 x grade 9, 1 x 8 and 1 x 7) said that she too was pleased the waiting was all over, “I think yesterday was worse than this morning.  I couldn’t sleep last night and was shaking with nerves when I opened my envelope.  Now I’m looking forward to celebrating with my family this weekend.”

We saw a stunning 83.8% of exams graded 9, 8 or 7 (A* or A).  99.1% of all GCSE exams taken at Bancroft’s were graded at 9-5 (representing the old A*-B grades) which is a fantastic achievement.  We are very proud of all our pupils’ achievements, they have worked extremely hard to meet the demands of the new exams and have been supported along the way by a team of dedicated teachers.

Head, Simon Marshall added his congratulations for these fantastic achievements, “This Fifth Form has been a really hard-working cohort and it is great to see their dedication rewarded.   It’s been a nervous few years for both pupils and teachers and I am delighted with their success in these demanding examinations. “

This is the first set of results completely under the new style, tougher GCSEs and despite this nearly 65% of all results are graded at 8 or 9 (equivalent to the old A*) – this is an exceptional performance.

We look forward to welcoming this talented year group back as members of the Sixth Form in September to start the next stage of their educational journey with us.
