Oxbridge Successes 2020

For some of our U6th, thirteen has proved to be a very lucky number as we celebrate another year of Oxbridge success.  Eleven members of the current Upper Sixth (year 13) have secured offers from Oxford or Cambridge colleges and they are joined by two Old Bancroftians, Hannah Herbert-Owen and Lorelei Booth, who left school in June 2019.  Such places are highly oversubscribed and increasingly competitive.  These talented pupils will have faced a tough selection process consisting of pre-tests, as well as intensive scrutiny of their academic achievements and rigorous interviews.   All places for current year U6th pupils are conditional on their A Level results this summer.

Such success is not achieved without a good deal of hard work from the pupils as well as hours of dedicated support and encouragement from their teachers, who have provided guidance, extra tuition and interview practice over the past months.  Members of staff deserve special thanks for all their work and encouragement.

This year the pupils hope to study a wide range of subjects, including English, Engineering, Education, Maths, Medicine and Modern Languages.  Special congratulations to Isabelle Wokoma; not only has Isabelle been offered a place to read Classics at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge she has also secured a much prized Organ Scholarship.

Head, Simon Marshall, said, “I am delighted to report some wonderful successes for our pupils in their applications to these renowned universities. As well as notable Oxbridge successes, there were of course disappointments for some equally hard-working students.”

Looking at the overall picture with university applications so far, most of our pupils are achieving a range of excellent offers and we are extremely proud of the successes of so many of our U6th in achieving offers from their first and second-choice universities.
