Translation Competition Triumph for Bancroft’s Girls
Two Remove (year 8) girls demonstrated their aptitude for languages by claiming first and second place in a national German Translation competition. Nimran and Sejal were amongst the last 44 Year 8s and 9s out of the 14,476 schoolchildren who had originally entered the competition in September. The Bancroft’s pair was unfazed by the strong competition at the National Final, which was held at Cambridge University, and refused to be put off by a tie-break round. Nimran finished in overall first place, while Sejal claimed second place. They were presented with their awards by Counsellor Nigel Gawthrope, Mayor of Cambridge and Stephen Turkington of the European Commission (the EC sponsors the event).
The Routes into Languages Foreign Language Translation Bee is a competition for students in Years 8 & 9 allowing them to build their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language
Miss Laura Williams, Teacher of German at Bancroft’s, who has worked with the girls in preparation for the contest, said, “I have been impressed by the effort they have put into preparing for the competition throughout the year and it has been an absolute pleasure to support both of them.”
The girls truly did themselves proud in both the Regional and National Finals against some very strong competition and through nerve-wracking tie-break and sudden-death rounds. They conquered their nerves throughout and did not falter in their performances. A fantastic achievement!

In addition, Shanuga from the Thirds (year 7) finished in third place in the Year 7 German Spelling Bee National Finals held at Cambridge University on Friday 29 June.
